3 The tempter came and said to him, “If ^{▼▼Or Since} you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”

4 But he answered, “It is written,Deut 8:3

‘One must not live on bread alone,

but on every word coming

out of the mouth of God.’” ^{▼▼Deut 8:3}

5 Then the devil took him to the Holy City ^{▼▼I.e. Jerusalem} and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.Neh 11:1, 18; Isa 48:2; 52:1; Matt 27:53; Rev 11:2 6 He said to Jesus, ^{▼▼Lit. him} “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written,Ps 91:11-12

‘God ^{▼▼Lit. He} will put his angels in charge of you,’

and

‘With their hands they will hold you up,

so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.’” ^{▼▼Ps 91:11-12}

7 Jesus said to him, “It is also written,Deut 6:16

‘You must not tempt the Lord your God.’” ^{▼▼Deut 6:16}

8 Once more the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 He said to Jesus, ^{▼▼Lit. him} “I will give you all of these things if you will bow down and worship me!”

10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, ^{▼▼Other mss. read Get behind me} Satan! For it is written,Deut 6:13; 10:20; Josh 24:14; 1Sam 7:3

‘You must worship the Lord your God

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to him.Heb 1:14

12 Jesus Begins His Ministry in Galilee Mark 1:14-15; Luke 4:14-15Now when Jesus ^{▼▼Lit. he} heard that John had been arrested, he went back to Galilee.Mark 1:14; Luke 3:30; John 4:43 13 He left Nazareth and went and settled in Capernaum by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 in order to fulfill what was declared by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

on the road to the sea, across the Jordan,

Galilee of the Gentiles!

and for those living ^{▼▼Lit. sitting} in the land and shadow of death,
